Typography & Architecture

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Words, can they express a lot more than their basic meaning?

What would happen if writing sprawled over the frame of the book or the screen, if the letter encroached the body, if a word appeared as a piece of architecture in a landscape? At the intersection of art, stage design, graphic design and architecture, the appetite for reading can be embodied in the environment.

The applications are varied and fun giving.  It’s possible to imagine the temporary and the permanent, the soft and the hard, the weak and the strong, the static and the mobile…

What language does the strength of materials speak? What are the alphabets and the letterpresses that structures prefer? What words, what sentence enounce, proclaim a footbridge « which holds up well » ? What composition of letters offers the best resistance and ensures sufficient rigidity?

An Oulipian footbridge

To evoke the bracing of a beam, one often speaks of geometry in terms of “X”, en “K”, or in “V”?  Thus, one represents the geometry of the preferred paths of the loads.

The ‘Oulipian” footbridge” wishes to persevere in this early language as an honour to the group and to the body of work of the Potential Literature, Workshop, the OuLiPo.
