The Porte Eole station is a new facility planned for the 2024 Olympic Games and required for the extension of the RER line E to the west of Paris. A complex structure by nature, the station is organized around a 28 m by 150 m open-air trench. It is topped, to the right of the Palais des Congrès forecourt, by an accessible glass floor approximately 140 m long and 10 m wide.
The glass floor of the station is located at the level of the public space and extends over approximately 150 meters in length. Its main purpose is to bring natural light down to the platforms located 39 meters below, while maintaining the continuity of pedestrian circulation. The station’s steel structures cover a wide range of components, from struts subjected to over 4,000 tons of compression to the slender metal framework supporting the glass slabs. This diversity of structural elements has provided a remarkable playground for Elioth’s engineers, who were able to apply both their technical expertise and their finesse in the design of the framework.
The laminated glass floor panels required extensive studies and were subject to a technical assessment for experimental use as well as full-scale testing. The simultaneous study of the steel structure and the glazing made it possible to design a construction that combines numerous architectural qualities and lasting techniques.
