The North structural glazing facades of the workshops of the Ecole d’Architecture de la Ville et des Territoires, built by Bernard Tschumi in 1999, show several defects that may be linked to execution issues, design flaws, or ageing of the building components. These defects could pose a potential safety risk for users in the short or medium term. The renovation of these facades is part of a broader strategy to reduce energy consumption.
A structural and thermal assessment of the façades was carried out with the objective of initiating a renovation program. The defects affecting these façades were identified, and several renovation scenarios were developed. A pilot dismantling operation involving the removal of a façade frame was performed to assess the condition of the load-bearing structure.
It was decided to retain the existing primary mullions, offering several significant advantages: their conservation allowed the façade replacement to be completed within a two-month construction period during the summer break, since the existing structural grid was already in place. This approach also resulted in substantial cost savings compared with a full replacement and contributed to a reduced carbon footprint. The replacement of the transoms was necessary due to the observed defects, and a new mullion-to-transom connection system was designed. A mock-up on site was carried out to validate the proposed solution.
The old glazing was recovered on site by Saint Gobain for their recycling process
