Strasbourg Exhibition Centre

Contracting authority: Eurométropole de Strasbourg
Team: Kengo Kuma & Associates, OTE Ingenierie, Elioth, LTA, 8’8″, l’Autobus Imperial
Surface area: ~25 000 m² sqm of exhibition halls
Phases: Contract award / Construction
Timescale:construction work 2020-2022

The new Exhibition centre is to be built alongside the Convention Centre (Palais de la Musique et des Congrès) on the Wacken site. This iconic building plays host to a wide-ranging audience. A vast roof covers the 4 main halls and the Nave, a reception area extending onwards from the concourse running alongside the canal and a car park. A fifth hall is built symmetrically on the other side of the concourse and Avenue Herrenschmidt.

Expertise employed

The glazed facades of the building’s Nave are made up of a high (up to 13 m) curtain wall and outsize glazed surfaces (3 m L x 4.85 m H), which constitute a key challenge with respect to the challenges of seismic activity.

The opaque facades made from a double metallic skin coated with asymmetric vertically veined corrugated metal, perforated in stripes, contribute to expressing the building’s verticality.

Guaranteeing comfortable conditions for occupants whilst keeping environmental impact to a minimum are the main goals featured in the ecological ambitions of the metropolitan council and the project: natural ventilation, water resource management, construction material quality, the use of wood, energy supply, biodiversity safeguarding, low-nuisance worksite, and extensive use of roofing to generate electricity.

The facades express the architectural intention of verticality and finesse.
