Velodrome stadium renovation

City : Marseille
Client : Arema Groupement PPP GFC
Team : GFC Construction / SCAU / Egis Méditerranée / Elioth / Rogeon Architecte / G2i / Beterem / Socotec / Lamoureux / Exprimm
Surface area : 60 000 m² of roofing

The Velodrome stadium is finally covered, for the great pleasure of OM’s biggest fans. This symbolic place in Marseille now features a new roof spanning over the existing stands. Its Steel structure covered with PTFE membrane undulates over the stands to work as a shell only supported in 4 points. Construction was a major challenge as it took place during 4 game seasons without interruption.

Expertise

Elioth assisted the project team on the structural frame, the envelope and the environmental studies up to project completion in October 2014. Due to its geometry and size this was a highly complex project and gave Elioth the opportunity to implement large scale geometrical modeling tools which were combined with finite element calculation software.

Environmental research.

Beyond the tools, the combined design of the frame with the envelope allowed us to complete a building whose structural design fully reveals the architectural intent while guaranteeing optimization with a special emphasis on lightweight fine-tuning.
